Product Description

Inspired by the spiritual beliefs of the Bambara people from Mali, this dog is believed to be the servant of Nyama, their spiritual guide. Victor Yao Delanyo carves this faithful replica form sese wood featuring a focused and sentry position. The dog’s eyes are wide open, and the animal appears to be barking. It has two sets of ears, behind and in front, to ensure the quick notice of an intruder. Its coat is adorned with shiny brass plates and red sheda cotton cloth. The Bambara are the largest ethnic group in Mali and though they are now converted Muslims, many have retained their traditional beliefs and customs. Amongst these, is the custom of carving fetish figurines believed to carry the spiritual powers of Nyama. As such, it would enable them to transform wood and iron into religious objects, such as masks and dolls, worn for initiation rites and dances to invoke the aid of the spirit world.
